You’re eager to get to work on your book, but there are some questions you should ask your ghostwriter before pen is set to paper. For example: * Who is in charge? * How long will it take? * How will you communicate? Let's take a closer look at these vital questions.

Ask  Your  Ghostwriter...

#1 - WHO'S IN CHARGE? You, the client, are the boss. But the ghostwriter should be the expert on how to write and structure the book. You hired a professional. Trust him or her to do a good job - or get a new ghostwriter.

#2 - HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? It's difficult to say exactly how long it will take to write your book, because there are so many variables. However, most memoirs, business books and health books can be completed in 6 to 12 months.

#3 - HOW OFTEN WILL YOU COMMUNICATE? Are you OK with not hearing from the ghostwriter until the manuscript is complete? Or do you prefer to keep abreast of the progress?  Your preference will determine how often you will talk and share drafts of the work.

#4 - WHAT WILL YOU GET AT THE END? Ask your ghost what you will have in hand when the project is complete. For example:  * Will you have a rough manuscript? Or a proofed manuscript ready for publication? * Will pictures and diagrams be inserted in their proper places?

#4 - WHAT WILL YOU GET? (continued) * If the book is to be self-published, will the text file (and any image files) be acceptable to the self-publishing firms? * Is the ghost providing the copy for the back cover and book cover flaps?

#5 - ANY ADDITIONAL SERVICES? Ask if the ghostwriter will write your marketing materials, website text, query letters, and/or book proposal for additional fees. These supporting materials are probably not included in the ghostwriter package, so be sure to ask.

#6 - WHO WILL WRITE THE BOOK? Many ghostwriters handle all of the writing themselves. But a ghostwriting firm may assign your book to a staff ghostwriter. If this matters to you, find out who will be doing the writing!

#7 - ANY ADDITIONAL EXPENSES? Ask your ghostwriter who pays for transcribing interviews, travel expenses, copies, and so on. This should be determined ahead of time so you aren’t surprised later on.

#8 - WHO DOES THE RESEARCH? There may be people to interview, newspaper or professional journal articles to track down, historical data to collect, and so on.  Ask your ghostwriter if he or she does the research, and if there are additional fees for doing so.
